SeaPerch Competition
April 24, 2017
Our 2017 SeaPerch season ended on Saturday, April 8th with the regional competition at Union College. Forty-nine teams of 2-4 students in grades 6-8 got to show off their skills in the pool, navigating their ROVs through an obstacle course and a finesse course. One hundred forty students from area schools, as well as homeschoolers, participated in the challenge at Union College, with many more participating regionally and nationally.
The challenge was the culmination of a 10-week program, in which students built underwater ROVs, deepening their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math. Students also learned about tool safety, problem solving, teamwork, and the use of technical procedures. During the competition, students had to navigate their ROVs through hoops, pick up and move rings, move sliders and hit a target. Top marks went to a team from the Guilderland YMCA, with teams from Niskayuna taking second and third.
